Pro-Minded: Why Getting Present is an Athlete’s Advantage.

“Pro” is a positive term that refers to the advantages in a situation when weighed against an opposing option.

A present-minded mentality or what I like to call Pro-Minded is a powerful mindset and practice that allows athletes and people to embrace and engage with the present moment while directing themselves to the “pros” in the situation.

In almost every competition there are pros and cons or the possibility of success or failure. When athletes get confronted with pressure or challenges they often allow the cons to overtake the pros. When that happens athletes are no longer in the present moment but playing out the past or future. In order for an athlete to best utilize their talents they must be able to pull their attention back to the moment and focus on what they can do.

By engaging in a present-minded mentality, athletes can experience a greater sense of clarity, mindfulness, and control. This mindset encourages playing intentionally, making conscious choices, and appreciating the excitement and opportunities that exist in every moment.

Athletes who can direct themselves into the present moment and focus on the advantages they are already equipped with are better able to adapt, react, and seize opportunities, even during the most challenging times.

Getting present for athletes

The Pros of Being Present.
Here are some key pros of embracing presence:

1. Enhanced Performance: When you are fully present in your athletic journey, you can tap into your potential and perform at your best. By focusing on the present moment, you can stay in the zone, making split-second decisions and executing precise movements without distraction. This heightened state of mindfulness can lead to improved agility, accuracy, and overall performance. Being present sharpens your cognitive abilities, enabling you to react faster, adapt to changes, and strategize effectively.

2. Efficient Training: By being present during your training sessions, you can maximize your time and make each session count. When you are fully engaged, you are more likely to concentrate on correct form and technique, leading to more efficient skill acquisition. This can fast-track your progress and help you achieve your goals faster than if you were simply going through the motions.

3. Improved Concentration: Practicing presence allows you to block out distractions and fully focus on the task at hand. This helps you stay in tune with your body, enabling better coordination, balance, and timing. By honing your ability to concentrate, you become less prone to mental errors or lapses during competition.

4. Reduced Anxiety and Stress: Being present can play a crucial role in managing anxiety and stress. Instead of dwelling on past mistakes or worrying about future outcomes, focusing on the present moment helps you maintain a calm and composed mindset. By staying in the present, you give less power to negative thoughts and emotions, which can improve your mental resilience and overall well-being.

5. Enhanced Enjoyment: Presence allows you to fully immerse yourself in the joy of the sport or life. By savoring each moment, you can experience an increased sense of enjoyment, fulfillment, and satisfaction from your pursuits. This mindset not only makes the process more enjoyable but can also contribute to long-term engagement and motivation.
